PBIS: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports

PBIS is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety, and support improved academic outcomes. More than 10,000 U.S. schools are implementing PBIS and saving countless instructional hours otherwise lost to discipline. PBIS is a series of lessons outlining the expected behaviors in identified areas of the school setting. Identified areas could be hallways, bathrooms, classrooms, cafeteria, buses, playground, etc. Expectations are reinforced regularly by use of visual/verbal cues. Corrections can also be made using the same visual/verbal cues so that the correction is not seen as being negative but simply a reminder of the expected behavior. Students are rewarded according to demonstrated positive behaviors.
