PTO Minutes - August 27, 2015

Welcome Back

Dr. Register said the school year is off to a great start. The staff really enjoyed lunch from the Taco Stand on the first day.

Change in Officers

Simone Jenkins will not be serving as one of the PTO co-presidents this year because her children have transferred to another school. The board agreed to make no changes to other officer positions. Mandy Moon will serve as the sole PTO president for the 2015-16 school year, with mentoring help from last year’s president Kerith Smith.

Budget Update

The PTO budget balance as of August 24, 2015 is $5,118.96, with first day of school lunch for teacher's expenses having already been deducted from the funds.

Happy New Year Supplies

PTO usually provides each of the teachers with an allotted amount of money to purchase back to school supplies for their classrooms. Consensus among the staff was that, since the first few weeks of school are so busy and many parents send in supplies, January would be a better time for PTO to deliver classroom supplies.  Order forms will be given to teachers before Christmas, and supplies will be ready for distribution when school resumes in January.

Super Saver Cards

Order forms have gone home with students, and about 80 cards have been checked out. PTO’s goal is to sell 200 cards. Special thanks to MCMS and MCHS for buying 10 cards each. The Lunchbox in Colbert has requested they be added to next year’s card.

Field Trips

Teachers are already planning field trips for the school year. PTO will continue funding these trips with distribution of funds as follows: Pre-K will receive $200. Grades K-4 will each receive $500. 5th grade will receive $1,000 in order to pay for their overnight trip.

Parent Conference Teachers’ Lunch

PTO will provide lunch to teachers on Wednesday, October 21, the first day of parent conferences. Since the teachers do not have time to leave school for lunch before conferences begin at 1:00, having lunch available at the school allows them to enjoy a meal before their meetings. There are usually leftovers for the second day of conferences as well. Kerith Smith will make arrangements for sandwich fixings or platters. Anja Cleveland will distribute notes in agendas for parents to bring in other items. Dr. Register pointed out that no more than 10% of the PTO budget may go towards items/activities solely for teachers. Sandwiches provide an economical option that allows PTO to stay within the required 10%. Happy New Year classroom supplies do not count towards this 10% since they are for the classroom.

Spirit Sprint
Date

The board agreed with the faculty’s suggestion to hold the race on Thursday, October 22, so that Specials classes will lose minimal instruction time.

Teacher Committee

Kelly Self, Heather Thompson, and Lori Strickland have agreed to serve as teacher committee representatives for this year’s race.

Sponsor Donations

Donations have started coming in. PTO board members and CES staff will continue contacting sponsors. All sponsorships need to be in by September 18. Forms will be sent home with students in case we have other parents that would like to be business sponsors.

T-Shirts

This year’s shirts will be some combination of teal and navy blue depending on shirt availability. Ms. Thompson came up with a potential design.

Student Fundraising Activities

The six Fridays leading up to the Spirit Sprint will be themed dress up days. Students will pay 50 cents to participate in each themed day. There will be incentives for the grade who raises the most money through the dress up days. Themes will be:

  • Sept. 11 - Superhero Day. Dress as your favorite superhero. (No weapons, and masks cannot be worn during the school day.)
  • Sept. 18 - Crazy Hair Day. Wear your wackiest hairstyle to school.
  • Sept. 25 - Dress Your Best Day. Come to school decked out in your finest.
  • Oct. 2 - Team Day. Wear your favorite team jersey. Mr. Sikes will try to make arrangements for Hairy Dawg to visit.
  • Oct. 9 - When I Grow Up Day. Dress for your future career.
  • Oct. 16 - PJ Day

Future Meetings

The board agreed that, due to low turnout, general public meetings will not be held unless the need arises. The new Remind text and email updates seem to be working out well, so PTO information will be relayed to parents via that system and the CES Facebook page. Dr. Register will be in charge of sending out Remind PTO announcements, including a reminder for parents to “Like” the Facebook page. Chris Armel asked that pictures of school events and activities be sent to him so that he can post them to the page. Parents wanting to be involved with PTO are encouraged to contact the office or one of the officers (listed on the school webpage). We welcome all parents!
