What is the Comer PTO?
PTO stands for Parent Teacher Organization. The Comer PTO is a nonprofit group comprised of parents, teachers, and staff dedicated to improving the education experience of all students at Comer Elementary School. Our goals are to encourage interaction between family and school, serve as a source of support for families and the school, and work with teachers, staff, and the community to improve our children’s educational experience. The PTO works closed with the school administration to meet this goal.
What does the PTO do, exactly?
The PTO organizes, supports, helps, and volunteers at the school and school events. The PTO organizes various school events such as the annual cake auction and spirit sprint, helps with appreciation days for support staff and teachers, participates in school events such as the annual picnic and Title l annual meetings.
Who is in charge of the PTO?
The PTO is led by the Executive Board which includes the principal, designated teacher representatives and the PTO officers. The PTO officers are the co-presidents, co-vice-presidents, and secretary. The PTO officers are elected in the spring and generally serve for a two year term. We have designed our PTO board so that the co-vice-presidents become co-presidents after two years.
Who can join PTO and how do I become a member?
Any parent or guardian of a current student at Comer as well as all current faculty and staff can join PTO. All you have to do is complete an information form that provides contact information such as phone numbers and email addresses. There are no dues to join the Comer PTO.
Why should I become a member of the PTO?
First, it gives you a voice! Your membership entitles you to vote at all meetings on PTO business. Second, you can help volunteer to help with our many events throughout the year in order to enhance your child’s learning experiences. Third, your support helps our school with fundraising and volunteering.
How can I help?
There are many ways to help that will fit into your schedule. You can help by showing your support and participating in fundraisers. You can help by coming to school and PTO meetings. You can help by attending special school events and programs. You can help by volunteering your time at PTO and school events. You can help by signing up to be a member of PTO and receiving PTO emails and other updates.
Why should I come to PTO meetings?
The number one reason is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help our school. The PTO is a wonderful opportunity to become involved in your child’s education. Studies show students do better in school when parents are involved. PTO offers a place for you to learn what is going on at school and to make suggestions.
What happens to the money raised by the PTO?
Each year a budget is adopted by our PTO and PTO strives to raise funds to meet some of the items on the wish list of the school administration. While fundraising is not our primary goal, it is an important part of the PTO. Money raised by PTO sponsored events helps purchase supplemental materials for our
